Early Childhood Education

The Community Action Organization of Erie County, Inc. Head Start/Early Head Start Program (CAO) is a federally funded program in Erie County that provides educational and developmental comprehensive services including parent engagement and community partnerships to over 2,300 infants, toddlers, preschoolers and pregnant women.

CAO Head Start/Early Head Start promotes school readiness by enhancing the social and cognitive development of low-income children through the provision of educational, health, mental health, nutritional, family and community engagement, social and other services. CAO assists pregnant women in accessing comprehensive prenatal and postpartum care; supports parents’ efforts to fulfill their parental roles as the first and most important teacher for their children; and helps families build assets and move toward self-sufficiency. Parents play a vital role in our program and are encouraged to volunteer in the classroom, parent committees, and as a part of the policy council members who help lead and make decisions for the program.

ELIGIBILITY:

Head Start/Early Head Start provides comprehensive services to age and income eligible children and families. Income guidelines are established annually by the Department of Health and Human Services. Families who receive TANF, SSI, participate in the foster care system and/or are homeless are categorically eligible for the program. CAO Head Start/Early Head Start provides services to a minimum of ten (10%) percent of children with disabilities; services are provided in Head Start/Early Head Start locations in Erie.

CAO Head Start/Early Head Start has 20 direct run academies, one delegate agency serving at 6 academies and 9 Child Care Partnership. Please contact your desired academies for more information.
