Dr. Raquel J. Schmidt is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Exceptional Education Department at Buffalo State. The department prepares teachers, scholars, and action researchers as exemplary leaders, and to advance the profession of special education through the science and art of teaching, learning, and collaborating. Furthermore, the department is home to the B.S.Ed degree in exceptional education with dual certification in exceptional education and childhood education (grades 1-6) and M.S.Ed degrees in special education: generalist 7-12, special education: childhood, special education: early childhood, and teaching bilingual exceptional individuals certification extension.
Dr. Schmidt has always emphasized the importance of serving the needs of people with disabilities and by broadening the general populations’ understanding and appreciation of individuals with disabilities. Prior to joining the faculty of Buffalo State in the fall of 2001, she worked for several years as a special education teacher. Her research interests include behavior management, authentic assessment, and teaching strategies that are effective for inclusive settings.
She is also a big believer in physical and mental health; not only does she lecture about mindfulness, but has traveled the world experiencing a range of cultures. Dr. Schmidt has been a certified ACE/AFAA Fitness Instructor since 1988, teaching hi/lo aerobics, step, hip-hop, and body sculpting classes while still in high school. Currently, in addition to teaching Spinning®, she also teaches yoga, cardio kickboxing, and Bellydance. She also is a mat & reformer Stott certified Pilates instructor. In 2004 she was selected to join a regional cycling team as a category 4 cyclist and went on to win gold medals in the New York State Criterium Championships (2005), New York State Time Trial Championships (2004), and a bronze medal in the New York State Road Racing Championships (2005). Internationally she has traveled to Europe (with a bicycle in tow) to ride several stages of the 2003 & 2004 Tour De France with local cycling enthusiasts.
Dr. Schmidt is a western New York native and graduate of Buffalo State.
